Why Is My Internet So Slow?

A simple, no-jargon guide with Ubiquiti UniFi tips

Slow internet isn’t always your ISP. It’s often Wi-Fi placement, device overload, or one app hogging bandwidth. Use this step-by-step guide to pinpoint the culprit fast.

Step 1 — Run a Speed Test (the right way)

  1. Plug a computer directly into your modem or router with an Ethernet cable (if possible).
  2. Open Chrome, Safari, or Edge.
  3. Go to speedtest.net or fast.com.
  4. Click Go/Start and wait ~30 seconds.
  5. Record:
    • Download — streaming and browsing
    • Upload — video calls and sending files
    • Ping/latency — responsiveness for calls and gaming

Repeat morning, afternoon, and evening. Big evening slowdowns = likely provider congestion.

Step 2 — Compare Wired vs. Wi-Fi

  • Wired fast, Wi-Fi slow → wireless setup is the issue.
  • Both slow → suspect the ISP or modem.

Step 3 — Fix Common Wi-Fi Issues

Placement

Keep routers central and high. Avoid closets — metal and concrete kill signal.

Interference

Microwaves, cordless phones, and neighbor Wi-Fi overlap. Change channels if needed.

Right Band

2.4 GHz = longer range/slower. 5 GHz = faster/shorter range. 6 GHz = newest, fastest if supported.

For larger homes or offices, we deploy Ubiquiti UniFi Mesh access points so every room gets consistent coverage and speed.

Step 4 — Count Your Devices

It’s common to have 20+ connected devices: PCs, phones, TVs, cameras, printers, consoles, smart speakers. Many use bandwidth in the background.

Consumer routers struggle here. Ubiquiti UniFi routers/firewalls handle higher device counts and let us prioritize work traffic over streaming.

Step 5 — Find Bandwidth Hogs

  • Updates — Windows, iCloud, or Microsoft 365 downloads
  • Cloud sync — Dropbox or Google Drive moving large folders
  • Malware — infected PC flooding the connection

Quick test: power off devices one by one. If speeds jump, you found the culprit.

Step 6 — When It’s the ISP

  • Peak-time slowdowns
  • Outdated modem or wiring
  • Plan mismatch — 100 Mbps split across 25 devices will crawl

Run a speed test at the modem. If that’s slow too, call your ISP and ask about a modem refresh or plan upgrade.

Step 7 — Call the Pros

  • 24/7 network monitoring to pinpoint slowdowns
  • Ubiquiti UniFi firewalls & Mesh APs for speed + security
  • Wi-Fi design for full-home or office coverage
  • Endpoint protection to stop hidden bandwidth thieves
  • Ongoing support — no more being stuck on hold with the ISP
